1989 Upper Deck Binder: When the Hobby Took the Leap

1989 Upper Deck Binder: When the Hobby Took the Leap

By 1989, the baseball card world was getting quite crowded. There was Topps, Fleer, Donruss, and the bright-colored borders new kid from the year before Score. That Score set was very cool, and 17 cards per pack was a nice little extra. We were knee-deep in packs.

Then came Upper Deck.

And they didn’t tiptoe in - they cannonballed into a crowded pool with something that felt instantly different. Crisper photography. White borders. Glossy, premium card stock. Two full-color photos - front and back. And that shiny little hologram that somehow made every card feel more official.

And yeah… they cost more. But they earned it.

Kind of like our binders.

The Cover: A Roster of Game-Changers

The 1989 set gave us plenty of great rookies that reshaped collecting, including one of the most popular cards ever of Ken Griffey, Jr., and the season gave us moments that still stand out today.

On the front of our binder, you’ll find:

  • Ken Griffey Jr., “The Kid,” whose #1 rookie card is as iconic as they come.
  • Kirk Gibson, rounding the bases after that unforgettable World Series walk-off.
  • Jose Canseco, fresh off becoming the first member of the 40/40 club.
  • Dale Murphy… in reverse! Yep, check the image. If you know, you know. How cool is THAT?!
  • Orel Hershiser, shutting down and shutting out everyone in his way in leading the Dodgers to a World Series no one saw coming.

It was a stacked year. And it deserved a bold set - and now, a bold binder.

Upper Deck Raised the Bar and Everyone Else Soon Followed

In just a couple of years, Topps, Fleer, Donruss, and Score all upgraded their game. Sharper photography, cleaner designs, better paper. That shift started in 1989 — and Upper Deck deserves the credit.

That same goal of raising the bar is what we try to do with our binders. Yes, they cost more. But they’re built to be better. Much better.

Details That Matter (and the Hologram’s Still There)

We had fun designing this one. You’ll find a nod to that original hologram and the silver foil packs on the back cover graphic. And yes, it’s built with the same premium mindset that Upper Deck brought to the table.

This binder comfortably holds:

  • The full 800-card base set
  • The full run of 3D team hologram stickers
  • Any special inserts or graded card pages (I feel like you HAVE to have a graded Griffey, Jr. in your set) you’ve picked up along the way

All wrapped in:

  • A 3-inch binder with angle-D rings
  • Premium stand-on-its-own chipboard construction - not vinyl
  • A matte finish that feels as sharp as it looks and is perfect for autographs
